We understand that seeking an autism or ADHD assessment can feel overwhelming — there’s a lot to think about and even more information online.

What is autism?

Autistic people see the world differently, they all have differences, which why Autism is called Autism Spectrum Disorder.
The videos from the National Autistic Society help explain autism.

What does an autism assessment look like?

We undertake full and comprehensive assessments, using ADOS-2 gold standard which are conducted in line with the recommended standards laid out by the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE).

Women and Autism

Autistic women have different strengths and challenges from men. Some girls and women can “mask” their difficulties very well. This means their autism can be harder for others to recognise and understand. Girls and women can often present with difficulties such as anxiety first. Have a look at “Jenny’s poem” video- to explore women and autism.

What is Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)?

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition that affects people’s behaviour. People with ADHD can seem restless, may have trouble concentrating and may act on impulse.
Symptoms of ADHD tend to be noticed at an early age and may become more noticeable when a child’s circumstances change, such as when they start school.

ADHD testing – using the QBCheck test.

The NICE medtech innovation briefing (MIB 318) for QbTest for the assessment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) Published: 07 March 2023. -states that the QbTest is being used at 131 sites across 65 NHS trusts. Social stories
The National Autistic society recommends the use of social stories, created by carol grey in 1991. This technique presents information in a literal, ‘concrete’ way, which may improve a person’s understanding of a previously difficult or ambiguous situation or activity. The presentation and content can be adapted to meet different people’s needs.
They can help with sequencing (what comes next in a series of activities) and ‘executive functioning’ (planning and organising).
Look at this excellent video from the early autism project to see how they work

By providing information about what might happen in a particular situation, and some guidelines for behaviour, you can increase structure in a person’s life and thereby reduce anxiety.
Creating or using a social story can help you to understand how the autistic person perceives different situations.
